How private coverage differs from VA life insurance
Many veterans already have some coverage through a VA program, and it is worth understanding what you hold before adding to it. The VA administers those programs directly. We have nothing to do with them, cannot enroll you in them, and cannot answer questions about your existing benefits — the VA is the right place for that.
The short version of how the main VA programs work, current as of 2026:
| VA program | Who it covers | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| SGLI | Service members on active duty. Continues at no cost for 120 days after separation. | $500,000 |
| VGLI | Veterans converting from SGLI after separation. Applying within 240 days generally avoids health questions; the window closes at one year and 120 days. | Up to the SGLI amount held |
| VALife | Veterans with a service-connected disability rating. Guaranteed acceptance, with a two-year waiting period before the full benefit is payable. | $40,000 |
Program details are set by the VA and can change. Confirm current terms, deadlines, and eligibility at va.gov. Nothing on this page is VA guidance.
Why some veterans look at private coverage as well
- VGLI premiums are based on age and increase as you get older, which some veterans find becomes expensive over time.
- The guaranteed-acceptance window for VGLI closes after separation. Miss it and you face health questions anyway.
- VALife caps at $40,000, which may not cover a mortgage or replace income for a surviving family.
- Private permanent coverage locks a premium that does not rise with age, and can build cash value over time.
- A veteran in good health may qualify for private rates that compare favorably — the only way to know is to compare both.
Common questions
Are you part of the VA?
No. Call For Life Quotes is a private company with no affiliation to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, or any government agency. We cannot enroll you in a VA program or access your VA records.
Will requesting a quote affect my VA benefits?
No. Private life insurance is entirely separate from VA benefits. Requesting a quote here has no effect on your disability compensation, health care, pension, or any VA insurance you hold.
Should I drop VGLI and buy private coverage instead?
That is not a decision to make from a web page, and we are not in a position to advise you on it. For some veterans, particularly those in good health, private coverage compares well. For others, especially those with health conditions that would make private underwriting difficult, VGLI is valuable precisely because it did not require them to qualify. Never cancel existing coverage until replacement coverage is issued and in force.
Does my service history affect what I pay?
Private carriers underwrite on age, health, and lifestyle rather than on veteran status itself. Some carriers ask about current military duties or deployment status. A licensed agent can explain how a specific carrier treats your situation.
